Fines for landlord and business after breaches of safety

BREACHES of fire safety regulation by a Derby landlord have resulted in a fine of more than £7,000. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service investigated a fire at 44, Freehold Street, Derby, in January and discovered there was no fire detection or alarm and no fire risk assessment had been carried out. Sarbit Sanghera pleaded guilty at Derby Magistrates’ Court and was fined £7,150 and ordered to pay £3,256 costs plus a victim surcharge of £120. In a second case, Derby business Platinum Estates was convicted of five breaches of fire safety legislation at premises they manage and let on behalf of the landlords of Byron Court in Codnor. The business pleaded guilty and was fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £4,002 costs plus a victim surcharge of £120.
